Matcha and Dates: A Nutrient-Packed Duo for Mind and Body

Matcha, though rooted in ancient tradition, has seen a surge in popularity in recent years, and for good reason. Its vibrant green hue and reputation for delivering a sustained energy boost without the typical caffeine crash are just a few of its many virtues. Matcha is far more than a trendy beverage; it holds deep cultural significance in Japan, where meticulous care is taken in its cultivation, processing, and ceremonial consumption.

Matcha is made from shade-grown green tea leaves, a practice that enhances the chlorophyll content and gives the tea its signature deep green color. Nutritionally, matcha is rich in catechins, particularly EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) a powerful antioxidant known for its anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. It also contains L-theanine, an amino acid found in green teas that supports relaxation, neuroprotection, and blood pressure regulation.

Pairing matcha with dates creates a delicious and nutrient-dense combination. Dates are naturally sweet and packed with essential minerals like iron, potassium, and magnesium. Their high insoluble fiber content supports digestive health by promoting regular bowel movements. Additionally, the antioxidants in dates have been linked to potential neuroprotective effects, making them a smart addition to any wellness routine.

Together, matcha and dates offer a synergistic blend of energy, calm, and nourishment perfect for fueling both body and mind.

Ingredients

8 Dates

2 tbsp Matcha

1/3 cup Cold Water

1 cup Milk

1 tsp Maple Syrup

2 tbsp Greek Yogurt

Directions

To prepare the date caramel

  • Remove the pits from 8-10 dates and add them to a container with hot water.

(you can either soak them in the hot water for 1hr or microwave the dates in water for 2-3mins or until slightly boiling)

  • Transfer soaked dates along with the liquid to a blender and blend until smooth.

  • Transfer the date mixture to a pot on medium heat and let it reduce to a thick dark brown mixture (this is your caramel).

  • Transfer the date caramel to an air tight container and stored in the fridge up to two weeks.

(the date caramel can be used in smoothies, as a topping on your favorite sandwich, in pancakes etc.)

To prepare the matcha

  • Sift 2tbsp of your favorite matcha powder into a bowl.

  • Add 1/3-1/2 cup of cold water to the powder and whisk until the granules are thoroughly homogenized.

  • To your glass of choice add about 1tbsp of the date caramel to the bottom (option to also smear a bit of it on the inner walls of the cup as garnish).

  • Add ice cubes and milk followed by the matcha.

  • In a separate bowl mix 2tbsp of greek yogurt and 1tsp maple syrup and add the yogurt cream to the top of the matcha.

  • Add a few dollops of the date caramel to garnish and sprinkle of matcha powder.
